When Should You Repaint Your Home's Exterior?

Exterior paint does more than make a house look good — it's your home's first line of defense against the weather. Knowing when to repaint protects both your curb appeal and the structure underneath.

The general timeline

Most homes need repainting every 5 to 10 years, but the right interval depends on your siding material, the quality of the last paint job, and how much sun and weather your home takes. Wood siding generally needs attention more often than vinyl or aluminum.

Signs it's time

Watch for peeling, cracking or blistering paint; fading or chalky color; gaps in caulk around windows and doors; and any bare or exposed wood. Any of these means moisture can get in — and that's when small problems become big ones.

Why preparation is everything

A lasting paint job is 90% preparation. We power-sand, scrape, prime bare spots and re-caulk before a single finish coat goes on. It's the difference between paint that lasts a couple of seasons and paint that lasts a decade — and it's the reason our clients call us back.
