Spring Home Maintenance Checklist for Westchester Homeowners
After a Westchester or Putnam County winter, spring is the ideal time to assess what the cold, snow and ice may have left behind. A little attention now prevents far more expensive repairs later. Here is the checklist we use with our own clients.
1. Inspect and clean the gutters
Clogged gutters are the number-one cause of water damage to siding, trim and foundations. Clear out leaves and debris left from fall, check that downspouts carry water well away from the house, and look for sagging sections or loose fasteners.
2. Wash away the winter grime
Mold, mildew and salt build up on siding, walkways and decks over the winter. An annual power washing not only restores the look of your home — it removes organic growth that can shorten the life of these surfaces.
3. Check exterior paint and caulking
Look for peeling, cracking or bare spots, especially on south- and west-facing walls and around windows and doors. Catching failing paint early keeps moisture out of the wood underneath and keeps a small touch-up from becoming a full repaint.
4. Refresh your deck
Decks take a beating from snow and ice. Spring is the time to clean, sand and re-stain so the wood is sealed before the summer entertaining season — and before sun and rain can cause lasting damage.
